Hello! I am the Dean of the Language Arts Division at Foothill College, overseeing
the departments and programs of English, Creative Writing, Journalism, English as
a Second Language, Spanish, Japanese, and Ethnic Studies. My job is to support and
advocate for the programs and faculty in my division to provide quality instruction
and to best support student success.
Prior to my role as dean, I served for 13 years as a full-time faculty member in the
English department here at Foothill, during which I focused on teaching pre-transfer
and transfer-level reading and writing, as well as technical writing.
I hold a BA in American Studies (Ethnic Studies emphasis) from UC Santa Cruz. My graduate
research, for an MA in English from Cal State East Bay, focused on an analysis of
Asian American narratives of return through a lens of post-national identity formation
in an age of globalization, with particular attention to landscape, language, and
legacy and their impact on senses of home, belonging, and collectivity. In parallel,
I studied the impact of, and pedagogies to address, linguistic privilege in the teaching
of academic reading and writing in the community colleges.
