Hey there! I'm Dr. Villanueva (he/him), but feel free to call me Dr. V or Voltaire.
Currently, I serve as a Counselor and Psychology Instructor here at Foothill College.
As a first-generation Filipino American who took a long road through college, I'm
passionate about helping all students thrive on their own academic journeys.
My teaching and research focus a lot on identity, consciousness, and making education
more equitable. I want to help provide the type of welcoming support and empowerment
that students from all backgrounds need to grow into becoming their best selves. I
earned my Doctorate exploring how colleges can better retain students of color specifically
at community colleges like Foothill.
In the Psychology Department, I typically teach the Child Development and Lifespan
Development courses. And in the Counseling Department, I teach College Success, Career
Life Planning and a course called Identity, Culture and Education.
I know how tough college can be when you feel "othered" or face obstacles that others
may not fully grasp. But you belong here and have so much promise! I strive to build
up programs like our Honors Institute and the Puente Project to provide underrepresented
students with resources all students deserve.
Outside teaching psychology courses and working one-on-one with students in counseling
sessions, I serve the campus as the Academic Senate President. This allows me to shape
more inclusive policies and dismantle unjust barriers still present today. I approach
this work, and interactions with every student, from a place of cultural humility,
compassion, and care for your holistic wellness.
I can't wait to connect with you!
