What is FYE?

Foothill's First Year Experience (FYE) program supports first-time, first-generation college students through a supportive community of students, faculty, staff, and administrators—in and outside the classroom, increasing chances of success and completing academic goals.

By joining our FYE cohort of students,  you'll . . . 

  • Experience a sense of belonging to the college in a welcoming community
  • Develop a stronger commitment to your education
  • Find support as you navigate your way through your first year of college
  • Explore majors and careers in the Society, Culture and Human Development Pathway
  • Take core courses together as a cohort
  • Participate in independent research based on your own interests and passions

About Foothill FYE  Instructors

Our FYE instructors support students in the following ways:

  • Promote student success through innovative pedagogy, campus engagement, and cross-discipline collaboration
  • Enjoy working with a campuswide team to support the academic success and personal growth of FYE students
  • Commit to exploring social justice and human rights issues that are relevant to students’ lives

Courses You'll Take

Summer Session

  • CNSL 5 Introduction to College: Monday–Thursday, Aug. 18-21, Meets in person 9-11:50 a.m. (1 unit)
  • NCEN 400 English Bridge: Aug.  26-Sept. 11, Hybrid, Meets in person 10 a.m.-1 p.m. (non-credit, no cost) NOTE: This course is optional.
  • FYE Orientation: Monday, Sept. 15, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Fall Quarter

  • ENGL C1000-4CF: Academic Reading and Writing (formerly ENGL 1A)  + Coreq NCEN-401A-4CF,  In person, Meets 10 a.m.-1:20 p.m. Tuesdays/Thursdays  (5 units)
  • ETHN 1 Introduction to Ethnic Studies, In person, Meets 1:30-3:30 p.m. Tuesdays/Thursdays (4 units)
  • LIBR 10-1FW Introduction to College Research, Online asynchronous (1 unit)

Winter Quarter

  • ENGL 1B Composition, Critical Reading & Thinking Through Literature. Hybrid, Meets in person 10-11:50 Tuesdays (5 units)
  • SOC 1H Honors Introduction to Sociology, Hybrid, Meets 1:30-3:30 Tuesdays/Thursdays (5 units)
  • STAT C1000 Introduction to Statistics (formerly Math 10) Hybrid, Meets in person 10 a.m.-1:20  p.m. Thursdays (5 units)

Spring Quarter

  • SOC 54H Honors Institute Seminar in Sociology, April 9-May14 Thursdays 1:30-3:20 p.m. (1 unit)
