About the Program
What is FYE?
Foothill's First Year Experience (FYE) program supports first-time, first-generation college students through a supportive community of students, faculty, staff, and administrators—in and outside the classroom, increasing chances of success and completing academic goals.

- Find support as you navigate your way through your first year of college
Is FYE the Program for You?
Our aim is to support first-time, first-generation college students who:
- Are full-time college students taking transfer-level courses
- Qualify for financial aid
- Are interested in the Society, Culture and Human Development Pathway
- Have a desire for academic and community support
About Foothill FYE Instructors
Our FYE instructors support students in the following ways:
- Promote student success through innovative pedagogy, campus engagement, and cross-discipline collaboration
- Enjoy working with a campuswide team to support the academic success and personal growth of FYE students
- Commit to exploring social justice and human rights issues that are relevant to students’ lives
Courses You'll Take
Summer Session
- CNSL 5 Introduction to College, Monday–Thursday, Aug. 18-21, Meets in person 9-11:50 a.m. (1 unit)
- FYE Orientation, Tentative Date: Sept. 16, 9 a.m.-Noon
Fall Quarter
- ENGL C1000: Academic Reading and Writing (formerly ENGL 1A) + Coreq NCEN-401A-4CF, Meets 10 a.m.-1:20 p.m. Tuesdays/Thursdays (5 units)
- ETHN 1 Introduction to Ethnic Studies, Meets 1:30-3:30 Tuesdays/Thursdays (4 units)
- LIBR 10 Introduction to College Research, Online (1 unit)
Winter Quarter
- ENGL 1B Composition, Critical Reading & Thinking Through Literature. Hybrid, Meets in person 10-11:50 Tuesdays (5 units)
- SOC 1H Honors Introduction to Sociology, Hybrid, Meets 1:30-3:30 Tuesdays/Thursdays (5 units)
- STAT C1000 Introduction to Statistics (formerly Math 10) Hybrid, Meets in person 10 a.m.-1:20 p.m. Thursdays (5 units)
Spring Quarter
- SOC 54H Honors Institute Seminar in Sociology, April 9-May14 Thursdays 1:30-3:20 p.m. (1 unit)
Program Requirements
- Attend Orientation
- Attend classes
- Attend FYE events/field trips
- Meet with a counselor at least once per quarter
- Participate in our Research and Service Leadership Symposium in spring 2026
