The conversation will begin with a general overview of these legal roadblocks, followed by a brief look at the path to legalized same-sex marriage in the United States, tracing its history from Baker v. Nelson to Obergefell v. Hodges. The discussion will then shift to recent developments, with a particular focus on last year's landmark ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County, which significantly expanded workplace protections for the LGBTQ+ community under federal law. Finally, the dialogue will conclude with a discussion of actions advocates and the public can take at the local level and how the law can help or hinder those efforts--from open government meeting laws designed to encourage public participation to federal street design manuals that discourage public signs of inclusion like rainbow crosswalks.
J.R. is an attorney with his own practice in nearby Cupertino. He is a co-founder of the local advocacy organization, Cupertino for All, which seeks to make Cupertino and its neighboring communities more inclusive and equitable. He is a graduate summa cum laude of UCLA, and of Santa Clara University School of Law.
