Thursday OCTOBER 1	LHM OPENING CEREMONY: AVP OF STUDENT SERVICES DR. LAURIE SCOLARI Noon-1 p.m. Join via Zoom. Your brain, body and spirit will be enlightened after hearing the heartfelt and history-making leadership story of Dr. Laurie Scolari, Foothill College's beloved Associate Vice President of Student Services, our LHM keynote speaker. Dr. Scolari will present her personal and professional history about her heritage and health triumphs and how she grew up in the lettuce fields of California's Salinas Valley after her mother emigrated to California from Mexico. Laurie's upbringing shaped her into the powerful leader she is today, and hearing from her, will allow your brain to envision your own history and struggles as a launching pad for your present and future successes. Dr. Scolari became a Doctor of Education at San Francisco State University and did her dissertation in First-Generation Students of Color: Easing their Transition to Community College. Her unique health and heritage story will open your eyes to the options of considering healing and hope during this time, and in the future. We'll watch COLEGAS* webinars together and follow each with a half-hour debrief immediately afterwards. Faculty and staff participants will receive certificates of attendance to submit for PGA/PAA credit. COLEGAS is composed of Latinx professionals who, through intentional advocacy and coalition building, lead and influence transformational systemic change within the California Community College system. We seek to foster and empower Latinx professionals through mentorship, networking and professional development to ascend and assume leadership roles at the highest influential levels to eradicate systems of oppression to provide opportunities and close the equity gap for Latinx students in higher education. Wednesday OCTOBER 7	COLLEGE HOUR SERIES I: LUMBE - LA MÚSICA Y NUESTROS ANCESTROS W/ MIGUEL GONZALEZ Join with Zoom at Noon-1 p.m. Passcode: Ancestros The calling on, singing to, and honoring of the ancestors is a practice shared by the Native American and African based cultures that comprise the great complex of what are now known as "Latin" cultures. From the Mexica Dia de Los Muertos in Mexico, to the Yoruban religions of Ifa in Cuba (so-called Santeria) and Candomble in Brazil; and the various Latin American Catholic mixtures with these cultures; We, as colonized and Hispanicized people of mixed Indian, African, and Spanish ancestry, belong to cultures that are held up by our ancestors, even if we have lost some of our connection to them. Miguel González and Wanda Cuesta--who have worked together over the years to bring Afro-Indigenous awareness to the Latinx community--will lead participants through a musical invocation of our ancestors with libations, drums, singing, Gaitas (Indigenous Colombian flute), chanting, dancing, and poetry from Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. They will talk about Cumbia as the quintessential mixture of Indigenous, African, and Spanish cultures, and the influence of Indigenous and African cultures on the "Latino" world. Wanda Cuesta is a vegan chef, singer, and entrepreneur from Cuba, now based in Oakland. Miguel González is a music educator, poet, entrepreneur, and songwriter. Sponsored by ASFC

Wednesday OCTOBER 21	AFRICANA LATINIDAD: A CONVERSATION ABOUT BLACK LIVES AND LATINX UNITY BY RAYMUNDO QUEZADA - HISTORIAN, PROFESSOR AT GROSSMONT COLLEGE Join with Zoom at 6-7:50 p.m. Passcode: 7v452v With the continued murders, oppression, and marginalization of Black Americans by the state, the Latinx community must recognize that Black Lives include Latinx lives and as Dr. King states, "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." MELISSA CERVANTES, DEAN OF INSTITUTIONAL EQUITY, DIVERSITY, AND INCLUSION Join with Zoom at 10-11:30 a.m. Passcode: Cultura Come listen to the lived experience of guest speaker Alecia Barillas. Alecia is a native San Franciscan and identifies as Afro-Latina. She will share her personal story of how colorism has affected her through her development as a child and her career choices. She will provide an overview of her inspirational life story despite many obstacles. We will discuss Alecia’s story, our own experiences with colorism, and establish ways in which to build bridges of solidarity within and beyond the Latinx community. The term “colorism” was first coined by Alice Walker to describe the “the prejudicial or preferential treatment of same-race people based solely on their color.” In the Latinx community, distinguishing people by their skin color--“light-skinned” or “dark-skinned”--is common practice and a legacy of white supremacy. In this lecture, we will discuss the history of colorism within the Latinx community and establish ways in which to build bridges of solidarity within and beyond the Latinx community. The term “colorism” was first coined by Alice Walker to describe the “the prejudicial or preferential treatment of same-race people based solely on their color.” In the Latinx community, distinguishing people by their skin color--“light-skinned” or “dark-skinned”--is common practice and a legacy of white supremacy.

In this lecture, we will discuss the history of colorism within the Latinx community and establish ways in which to build bridges of solidarity within and beyond the Latinx community.

El día de los muertos (November 2nd) is a day of ceremony honoring the dead that is the fusion of pre-Columbian rituals and European beliefs brought by the Spanish to Mesoamerica. On this day, family and friends honor, remember, and celebrate the lives of their deceased by placing the food, drink, and activities the dead enjoyed in life.
