Barbara Shewfelt, MFA, MS has taught in the Biology, Kinesiology, and Dance Departments at Foothill College for over 20 years. As an undergraduate, she attended UC Santa Barbara as a double major in Biology and Dance, and went on to complete her MFA in Dance from Tisch School of The Arts at New York University where she was a performing member of the Second Avenue Dance Company, and later, her MS degree in Biology from Stanford University with a research specialization in Neuroscience where she worked in the lab of Dr. Craig Heller, Principal Investigator, conducting experiments exploring the neurobiology of sleep and circadian rhythms. Barbara also has extensive training in all forms of flexibility and strength training techniques including Yoga, Pilates, and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation. She spent 5 years as a competitive Ballroom dancer and has directed and produced numerous student Dance performances at Foothill which included noteworthy guest choreographers and colleagues from New York City. Barbara has offered popular classes at Foothill College including Dance History, Biology, Exercise Physiology, Nutrition, Fitness and Wellness, Ballet, Yoga, Pilates, and Ballroom Dance.
