Break Through Tech AI is a virtual and in person (at UCLA) program to introduce you to AI and get you trained and skilled to pursue a future career in AI. Come to this info session to hear from two Break Through staff people about the program, the application process, and the benefits of participating in the program - skills building and money!

NCAS = NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars. It's a program where you can advance your capabilities in STEM, helping to prepare you for better representation and service in STEM fields. NCAS has three missions designed to challenge and build student knowledge and skills by focusing on NASA’s mission goals, collaboration, and career pathways. And it's a great stepping stone for a future internship at NASA!

Come to this info session to hear two current Foothill students share about their amazing experiences with NCAS and receive some guidance on applying. Deadline for Mission 1 is Monday, November 25, 2024

Learn about the summer Community College Internships available at SLAC as well as through the Department of Energy at a number of national labs all across the country. STEM Education Program Manager, Hillary Freeman, will join IN PERSON to talk about the application process for SLAC summer internships. 

Take a look at the website for more information about eligibility for these amazing internships. A few key points:

• have to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (have work authorization)
• have to have at least a 3.0 GPA
• have to be a STEM major

The Science Learning Institute and the STEM Division of Foothill are hosting STEM Day on the same day as New Student Orientation. If you are considering studying a STEM discipline and taking classes in science, technology, engineering, and math, come to this event to meet faculty, leaders of student clubs, and current STEM students to learn more about being a STEM student at Foothill!

There will be snacks and raffle prizes, including an iPad, gift cards, and other fun swag. The first 30 students who check in will receive a free 2024 STEM t shirt!

NASA-Ames and Foothill's Science Learning Institute invites YOU to join us for a hybrid event to explore ways in which using systems thinking in our approaches to geoengineering and planetary management are helping make progress toward restoring the vitality of our biosphere, to its healthy state as it was 10,000 years ago when human civilization first began to impact Earth's landscape. 

We will have speakers from academia, government, and industry, and will highlight current research in the context of ecosystems services, including efforts toward implementing carbon sequestration, the shift from a linear to circular economy, regenerative person-centered solutions, the paradigm-shift in sharing scientific information from restricted access to fully open science – and a focus on opportunities for individuals to get involved. We will also include a short break-out group discussion session to facilitate connection among participants on these topics.

Join us to be part of a community of citizen scientists trying to make a change to restore the vitality and health of our Earth!

This will be a hybrid event - in-person at Foothill College and on Zoom.

Robert Cormia, chemistry instructor at Foothill College, speaking about the importance of Carbon Sequestration.

Graham Lau, astrobiologist and communicator of science: Director of Communications and Marketing for Blue Marble Space, Research Scientist with the Blue Marble Space Institute of Science, Director for the Young Scientists Program at Blue Marble; also host of the show “Ask an Astrobiologist”, which is sponsored by the NASA Astrobiology Program and SAGANet.

Mary Yap, Co-founder of Lithos Carbon Lithos Carbon - the climate crisis can't wait. Humanity will need 10–15 billion tons of CO₂ removal a year by 2050 — but we're only 0.006% of the way there. Lithos accelerates the solution.

Former student interns, who will describe their projects and experiences working at NASA Ames Research Center.

Wenonah Vercoutere, Research Scientist with the Biophysics & Sustainability Laboratory at NASA-Ames will emcee this event. 

We will also provide information about opportunities to get involved!
