President's Communiqué
Even Taxes...
Greetings Foothill,
We are in extraordinary times: even Tax Day was been delayed.
How are you doing?
Remember, the Online Learning team is also offering one-on-one drop in office hours each week, including early morning and evening hours, and continuing weekly workshops. Drop in if you want to get help or just to decompress and think aloud with colleagues!
Thank you to the 117 folks who attended the first President’s Bi-Weekly Briefing! Hope you enjoyed the house-sorting game. I was tickled to see our chancellor answering a question about CARES in the chatroom. Follow-up: I had raised concerns last week about possibly undocumented students not being able to receive federal funds due to federal law. Yet most people including national leaders and organizations believed there was flexibility. I was on a “CEO Weekly Webinar” today, and a national lobbyist informed (much to the chagrin of many) that the funds could NOT be granted to undocumented students. Our college is committed to supporting undocumented students; thus, we will explore other avenues. Open to any suggestions people may have. More on the topic during next week’s bi-weekly briefing.

We have a special guest this Thursday. Assemblyman Evan Low will join us to talk about the increase in reported hate crimes against Asian Americans during this pandemic. We will also discuss equity and tutoring services. Join me!
Another big round of applause for the expanded Online Learning team and Equity Office for an extraordinary program with “Virtual Spring Professional Learning Week!”

As the talented Dean Lené Whitley-Putz informs me: there was considerable interest in tools that support video and interaction, including sessions on using Studio to create accessible, interactive videos within Canvas, using Zoom to host and record, and using Pronto to support community and student to student connections. There was also a lot of requests for ongoing access to the recordings from the sessions. To meet the need, the Online Learning team accelerated work on the week's archive, and currently have archived video for 75% of the sessions available on the Spring Flex 2020 Session Resources site. Feel free to visit throughout the quarter!
State Chancellor Eloy Oakley, as I previously mentioned, gave a special shout-out to Foothill for our Flex Week during his weekly webinar last week. He also tweeted this:
“See” you Thursday at 12:30 pm with special guest Assemblyman Evan Low!
Of Service,
Thuy
