What is RSI?
Regular Substantive Interaction (RSI) is an essential element of online teaching and learning that fosters meaningful interaction between students and instructors. When instructors implement quality RSI, it ensures that Foothill students have an engaging and effective learning experience.
What is meant by RSI?
- Regular means scheduled, consistent, and predictable interaction with students.
- Substantive means meaningful communication between the instructor and student about course content and learning outcomes.
- Interaction means instructor-initiated contact with an opportunity for students to respond.
Foothill College has a professional learning requirement to support RSI. All faculty who teach online are required to complete this 2-part process before they teach online courses.

OR - Submit an application for equivalency showing RSI-specific coursework or training from an accredited institution within the last two years. Coursework or training must have outcomes aligned with FHDA RSI professional learning and faculty must provide proof of completion.
